Botswana Regions:

Central Kalahari / Chobe Nat. Park /

Ghanzi Area / Okavango Delta / Okavango River

Botswana has got various administrative districts whose names are unfamiliar to foreign visitors. We therefore opted for presenting the information on places of interest sorted under the following much better known and distinctively different tourist regions of Botswana:

Central Kalahari - central Botswana

including some of Botswana's largest nature conservation parks: Central Kalahari
Game Reserve, Gweta, Makgadikgadi Nat. Park, Nata, Nxai Pan National Park

Chobe National Park - north-eastern/-central Botswana

including the Chobe River & Kasane area in the north-east and the Savuti Marsh/
Channel & Mababe Depression area in the northern centre of Botswana

Ghanzi Area - western Botswana

The first/last outpost of civilisation on the Trans Kalahari Highway when entering
Botswana from/departing from Botswana to Namibia. Most prominent around
Ghanzi are projects for the conservation of the Bushman culture, as numerous
San tribes inhabit the game-rich fringes of the Kalahari for generations.

Okavango Delta - north-central Botswana
including Maun on the south-eastern edge of the Okavango Delta and the
Moremi Wildlife Reserve comprising of the northern half of the delta.

Okavango River - north-western Botswana
Lake Ngami is actually not situated on the Okavango River but near the south-
western tip of the Okavango Delta. Since only travellers to western Botswana
will pass through the Lake Ngami area, it was listed under this topic.
The Shakawe & Sepupa area is truly an Okavango River destination, which
provides entirely different experiences of this great African river than its delta.
The Tsodilo Hills are an important landmark to the San people and situated
between the Okavango River and the Namibian border.

Ghanzi Area

Ghanzi Wilderness Area
For many years, the village of Ghanzi was nothing more than a small centre for the farming community with one hotel and only a few shops. Like Maun, it had the spirit of a frontier town but with the completion of the Trans Kalahari Highway, it has been transformed into an important tourist centre. It now sports three major hotels/lodges, two tented/huts camps and various luxury lodges on game farms. Do yourself a favour and travel to this wonderful new tourist destination and enjoy the hospitality, warmth and knowledge of the people. One can easily spend 3-4 days filled with interesting activities and enjoying this unique part of Botswana:
There are opportunities to learn some survival skills from the San. Most of the camps and lodges offer cultural activities, which include bush walks with the San and learning some bush skills. Sadly, the San culture and knowledge are rapidly disappearing – it may be your last chance to be part of this unique experience!
The major game species to be seen include eland, springbok, gemsbok, and red hartebeest. Some lodges have predators in farm camps that can be viewed and photographed.
Ghanzi is the perfect place to stock up as it has a variety of shops, filling stations and vehicle repair shops. There is also meat and fresh produce available. Remember to get fresh water as the water of the Kalahari is too salty for human consumption - if any is available at all!
