Bushmanland & Kaudom Game Park

Khaudom Game Park
This is one of the few remaining true wilderness areas in southern Africa. In this beautiful green park one can enjoy the real Kalahari far from the main tourist routes. For the adventurous tourist the park offers deep sand tracks, which surely require good orienteering and 4x4 driving skills.

The Kaudom Game Park borders Botswana and is accessible from the Bushmanland area that is today situated in Namibia's Otjozondjupa Region.

If there is an area in Namibia one should never visit with less than 2 four-wheel drive vehicles, it is this park. It is a largely uncharted wilderness with barely recognisable tracks as 'roads'. There are currently no campsites or ablution facilities and visitors have to be fully self-sufficient. Plans are underway though to develop some tourist infrastructure, from 2010 onwards.
The park has a size of 3008 km² and preserves the woodland savannah eco-system found in north eastern Namibia with trees that favour sandy soils. This is the preferred habitat of the endangered roan antelope and is the main reason why this park was founded in 1989. Khaudum is also the only park in Namibia where wild dogs still occur naturally, but one should consider oneself very lucky to see them. Elephants and numerous other game species are however frequently encountered, especially during the Southern African winter months.

Divundu &
Popa Falls Area

Bwabwata National Park
The Bwabwata National (formerly: Caprivi Game Park) is known as 'a people's park' as it supports both large wildlife and human populations. This special arrangement benefits mankind and the animal kingdom equally, with conservation and rural community development both coming out as winners from sharing this spectacular area.

The western part of the Bwabwata National Park is situated in the Kavango Region while its eastern part falls into the Caprivi Region.

Mahango Game Reserve
If you are looking for somewhere “off the beaten track” with a true wilderness feel, the Mahango area of the Bwabwata National Park is well worth considering. Located in the north east of Namibia on the Botswana border, the contrasting vegetation of the 25 400 hectare Mahango Game Reserve is widely considered one of Namibia’ s most varied and fascinating conservation areas.

Mission Stations: Andara
The village of Andara is situated 200km east of Rundu in the Kavango Region of Namibia. The area is inhabited by the Hambukushu people who live as farmers and herders along the banks of the Kavango River. In 1909, the first missionaries arrived at Andara but their work was not successful so they went back to Nyangana where they established a mission.

Popa Falls
Be warned, Popa falls are not falls at all, rather a series of rapids, waterways and islands on the Okavango River. When the river is low the highest visible drop is about 3m.

Rundu Area

Kavango River (Okavango River)
It is the fourth-longest river system in southern Africa, running south-eastward for 1,600 km (1,000 miles). It begins in Angola, where it is known as the Cubango River. Further south it forms part of the border between Angola and Namibia, and then flows into Botswana to become the Okavango River and eventually the famous Okavango Delta that drains into the sands of the Kalahari near the Moremi Game Reserve.

Khemu Open Market
The Khemu Open Market located in the Khemu high-density residential area in Rundu was called “Tandaveka” a local word to describe a sitting position of a relaxed person, whose legs are stretched out and crossed at the ankles.

Rundu
Situated in the north-eastern corner of Namibia this rapidly growing town is the administrative centre of the Kavango Region. As frontier town, Rundu is set to become the hub of trade and development in the north, especially with re-building efforts in Angola and the growing success of the Trans-Caprivi highway that links Namibia and its main port in Walvis Bay to the rest of Africa.
