Sedina Marine Cruise
The ‘SEDINA’ was named after the goddess of fishermen
and sailors, in Stettin on the Baltic Sea, the home town of Manfred
Wedell, who with his wife Gabi, circumnavigated the world in a tiny
8,10 m sloop during 1974 - 1977. On their return, they acquired the
design of the legendary "Spray" with which Captain Joshua Slocum
sailed around the world single-handedly: the first one ever in
history. According to this Bruce Roberts design, the couple built
the Sedina as a gaff - rigged schooner in The Netherlands from 1978
- 1981. They used 11 tons of steel for the multi-chime hull,
covering a length of 12.90 m, a width of 4.41 m and a draft of 1.33
m and 90 square meters of sails.
In 1981, the Sedina set out for her long voyage, bound southward
across the English Channel, down to Spain, over to Madeira, to the
Canary Islands, Cape Verde, over to the north east of Brazil and
down the coast to Uruguay. In 1984 she headed for Lüderitz and
shortly after, via St. Helena, back to Brazil. Home is where the
heart is, so the Wedell’s sailed the Sedina for the 4th time across
the Atlantic Ocean, dropping anchor at their final home port of
Lüderitz in January 1985, with some 22,000 nautical miles in the
wake. All these years, they shared their love for the sea as well as
the tales of their travels with many enthusiastic passengers, who
felt not only to sail the coastal water of Lüderitz, but at the same
time all around the world in just a couple of hours.
Daily trips visit the colony of Jack Ass Penguins at their sanctuary
on Halifax Island, and an old Whaling Station, with lovely views of
the lighthouse, Diaz Cross and a colony of Cape Fur Seals en route.
Passengers also learn a lot about the history of Lüderitz and the
entire area, as well as about the rich bird and sea life. |

Khomas Region
Windhoek Area |
Windhoek City & Township Tour
Windhoek was initially known as Ai-gams (spellt /Ai //Gamas), a Nama
word meaning ‘firewater’, ‘steam’, or ‘smoke’, and Otjomuise, a
Herero word meaning the ‘place of steam’. The Nama captain, Jan
Jonker Afrikaner, gave the town the name it carries today. In the
1840’s, Afrikaner settled where the most powerful spring reached the
surface. It is assumed that he - in a moment of nostalgia - named
the place after Winterhoek, the farm in the Cape where he was born.
During the German colonial administration, the town was called
Windhuk, which later became Windhoek.
A variety of historical buildings take centre stage in the city,
providing a broad spectrum of insights into Namibia's historic past:
Windhoek Museum; the "Tintenpalast" ("Ink Palace") -
Namibia’s original Government Building which now houses the Namibian
Parliament; "Christuskirche" - the Evangelic Lutheran Church,
a striking landmark built from local sandstone and completed in
1910; the "Alte Feste" (Old Fort) built in the 1890’s that
today houses the Independence Collection; the Office of the Prime
Minister.
An excursion into the history of Katutura starts with a visit to the
Old Cemetery located in today's suburb of Hochland Park where
Windhoek's black population resided prior to being moved to the
current Katutura. Eleven ‘old location’ residents lost their lives
as tensions escalated in 1959 and are buried here. The events
surrounding the forced relocation are commemorated annually on 10
December, a public holiday in Namibia.
Katutura means ‘we don’t want to stay’ - a drive through Khomasdal
takes us to Katutura, the sprawling suburb on Windhoek’s northern
outskirts that was established in the 1950’s as a result of South
Africa’s apartheid policy of divide and rule. Today Katutura is a
crowded place where people from different cultures live together in
peace and harmony. From iron shacks to up-market houses, it is a
diverse, lively and historical place to visit.
Observe the buzzing life at Katutura's open markets where street
vendors sell all and any type of produce and clothing. Here tour
participant have the opportunity to interact with the community and
try some of the food delicacies. Different types of traditional food
are sold and nowhere else but at these open markets, such as
Otjizema no Nyama (porridge & ,eat), Ovikuki (fat cakes), Oshikundu
(traditional beer), Omafuma (frog meat), Outete (barbeque), Omaungu
(mopane worms), Ekaka (dried spinach), Omakunde (beans), and
Oshigali (dried beans) - to mention but a few.
Next stop is the Penduka Development Project situated at the
Goreangab Dam in Katutura, The word Penduka, meaning ‘wake up’ in
Oshiwambo and Herero, urges women throughout the country to become
proactive and productive. This they have done and the project is a
bustling little industry with a production unit, craft shop, tearoom
and restaurant. A wide variety of handicrafts are produced and sold
from needlework to embroidery and pottery.
After a drive through the ‘Shanty Towns’, which sprung up as people
flocked to the city in search of employment and built houses out of
any kind of waste materials, the tour ends with a drop-off of
participants at their respective accommodation establishments in
Windhoek. |
