Lodging & Camping
- Okavango River/ Shakawe Area - |
Drotsky's Cabins
The lodge is situated on the banks of the Okavango, overlooking the
several kilometre wide river, dotted with floating papyrus reeds. It
offers comfortable bungalows with an authentic atmosphere.
The campsite is very popular and bookings are essential.
Drotsky's six chalets are set amongst well-watered lawns in a
shaded haven under a canopy of thick riverside trees. Colourful
shrubs and banana trees have been planted in between, creating the
welcoming impression of a green and tropical haven.
Two of the chalets sleep two people, whilst the other three are
bigger, built on two levels, and can sleep a maximum of five guests
each. All are in an A-frame design with low brick sidewalls
supporting a tall, steeply angled thatched roof. They are
insect-proof with mesh on the windows and lit by main electricity.
They all have simple furnishings, rugs on the floor, and a tabletop
electric fan.
Central to the lodge is a bar and a very large dining area, built
over the river. Drotsky's is a genuine long-established camp very
well run as a family business. Its owners have seen Shakawe change
from a remote outpost to a thriving little town, and their
hospitality hasn't been learnt from a manual. Bearing this in mind,
it is a great place that offers fascinating insights into the area,
its history and its eco-systems. The deep-water channels of the
river are excellent for bird watching or fishing, although there is
little game around except for hippos and crocs.
Various kinds of guided excursions by motor boat
are on offer at the camp. |

- Okavango River/ Shakawe Area - |
Shakawe Fishing Lodge
The lodge stands on the bank of the Okavango River, a little less
than 3km east of the main road. It was started as long ago as 1959;
subsequently its present owners, Barry and Elaine Price, now very
well-known local characters, took over the fishing camp in 1975.
Since its extension in order to also accommodate guests interested
in Okavango River experiences rather than only fishing, there are
10 large, thatch & bungalows on offer. Each has a fan and mains
power throughout, and an en-suite bathroom. All are carpeted, though
very basic.
There is a circular thatched boma, used as a bar/dining room,
adjacent to a small lily-covered lagoon situated behind the splash
pool.
Under shady trees on the river bank, a few meters south of the main
lodge, is the campsite. This is a lovely, grassy site with
simple ablutions and a few metal drums that act as barbeque stands
for cooking.
Various kinds of guided excursions by motor boat
are on offer at the lodge, which e.g. take guests into the lagoons
and side-channels of the Okavango River for some excellent bird
watching and fascinating nature experiences with abundant great photographic opportunities. This is one of the best places to
observe Fish Eagles and Carmine Bee-Eaters. |
