- Moremi -

Moremi Game Reserve - Camp Sites
Moremi Game Reserve covers approximately 5000 square kilometres and must be rated as one of the most beautiful reserves in Africa.
It is named after Chief Moremi of the Batawana tribe who was instrumental in getting his people to set aside the land in 1963, which was officially designated as a game reserve in April 1965. The area was initially managed by the Fauna Conservation Society of Ngamiland and extended to include Chiefs Island, in 1976. In August 1979, the reserve was taken over by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. A further extension was done in 1992 and now the reserve contains within its boundaries approx. 20% of the Okavango Delta.
Moremi, where the bushman hunted as long as 10,000 years ago, covers the eastern section of the Okavango Delta including a peninsula that reaches into the delta. It combines mopane woodland and acacia forests, flood plains and lagoons. Its great diversity of plant and animal life made Moremi so well known.

Moremi's South Gate and public camp site are situated approx. 100km north of Maun and forms the southern entry point into the reserve. The area tends to remain dry. There are no permanent camps or lodges at South Gate and the road network is very limited.

3rd Bridge Camp Site: Although it is not any longer permitted to swim at Third Bridge, a trip to Moremi is not complete without a visit to this beautiful area. Game is plentiful, the birdlife is excellent and if you can get a booking confirmed, you should spend at least two nights at Third Bridge. Lions often come into camp at night and they regularly cross the bridge. One can see Leopard, Cheetah and Hunting Dogs in the area and there are always Elephant and Hippo around. Baboons are a bit of a problem and it is advisable to collapse tents when going out on game drive.
Provided there is no food inside, they will usually ignore the collapsed tent. There are ablutions but no other facilities. It is necessary to make fire in the boiler if you want hot water. Third Bridge is very central as one can easily do day trips to Bodumatau, Mboma Island and Xakanaxa.

The North Gate or Khwai Camp Site is situated on the northern border of the park, en route to and from Savute. The North Gate area can literally pump with game at certain times of the year and is well worth a visit. An interesting fact is that the descendents of the people originally relocated from the park in 1963 now live at Khwai Village just outside the park. There is one very good quality private lodge in the area.

Chiefs Island can only be accessed from the air and can only be visited, if staying at one of the upmarket lodges on the island. Depending on which of these are visited, Chiefs Island is one of the very few areas in Botswana where one is almost guaranteed of finding the Big 5. As the island is inaccessible by road it tends to be very private providing an unrivalled game viewing experience.
