Northern
Namibia - extended
16-Day/15-Night
Accommodated Self-drive Safari
from/to Windhoek covering the natural highlights and ethnic
cultures in north-central, north-western and coastal Namibia as
well as Sossusvlei and the Sesriem Canyon in the southern Namib
Desert
The
Northern Namibia Tour
described on the previous page is
not really complete without a visit to Sossusvlei and the sand dune
fields of the southern Namib Desert. We therefore recommend to
first-time visitors and those who just cannot get enough of Namibia
to opt for its extended
16-day version.
Only two more safari days are necessary to round off your
experiences of the Namib Desert that looks very different in
Northern Namibia than in the south:
Once you reach Swakopmund, you are already familiar with most
of the Namib Desert's many different faces, from rugged high
mountain ranges to vast barren gravel plains. The Kuiseb River
however prevents the southern Namib's sand dunes that cover
thousands of square kilometres moving further north.
They are at their highest and most impressive around the depressions
of Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei, both formed by ancient rivers.
The amazing spectacle of the Tsauchab River breaking through
the sand barriers beyond its Sesriem Canyon and transforming
Sossusvlei into a shallow lake can still occasionally be seen in
years of particularly heavy rain falls in the river's catchment
area.
Climbing one of the Namib dunes opens up vistas of a sea of sand
that is not only very photogenic but a sight to behold. |

Days 13 and
14 Swakopmund - Sossusvlei
Departing from Swakopmund, travel south via Walvis Bay to the world
famous Sossusvlei, situated in the heart of the Namib Desert. Via
the Kuiseb- and Ghaub Canyons you reach Solitaire where a cup of
coffee and delicious apple crumble may be enjoyed at a farm shop
well known beyond the borders of Namibia. For those of you who are
still adventurous when reaching Sesriem pay a visit to Sesriem
Canyon. Climb down into the canyon and enjoy the cool shade and
permanent water pools at the bottom. Once you reached your
accommodation, the remainder of the day is at leisure to relax at
the swimming pool and enjoy the wondrous view over the desert
plains.
A visit to Sossusvlei at sunrise is definitely worth getting up a
little earlier than usual. Experience the change of colours from
purple to orange, red and yellow while the sun is rising. Within an
hour or so the sun will burn down from above and soon make you flee
back to the shade of your room or the swimming pool. The tough ones
can visit Dead Vlei and climb up “Big Daddy” the highest dune in
this area.
